Team Selection Criteria
Please note: As of this season (2008/09) there will be no WP team selection for 8-11 years, as there is no longer SA Champs for this age group.

2008/9 Western Province Triathlon Association (“WPTA”) guidelines, criteria and minimum requirements for Western Province Triathlon and/or Western Province Duathlon team selection.

In order to be eligible for inclusion in the WPTA provincial teams for Triathlon and/or Duathlon athletes must:

1. Be a registered WPTA member (and through WPTA affiliation Triathlon South Africa (“TSA”) members) by the 30 November 2008 (triathlon) and by the 31 May 2009 (duathlon). It is up to the individual athlete to confirm that they have in fact been registered:
  • Athletes must be able to present their cards at competitions should they be required to and must where possible include their TSA registration number on the entry form. TSA registration is valid from 1 Sept to 31 August of each year unless otherwise specified.

2. The athlete must have completed and be able to provide WPTA with the results of at least one TSA/ITU sanctioned road triathlon / duathlon event for their present standard distance, in either the current or the immediately preceding season, excluding the Western Province Championship (“WP Champs”).
  • To facilitate this requirement a WPTA “Qualifier” sanctioned event is available for this purpose (WP Trials). Other sanctioned standard distance events (per standard age group distance) around the country are also available.
  • These results may also be used as a ‘back up’ should an athlete be injured, suffering from illness, emergency etc on the day of the WP Championship (a medical certificate or equivalent must be presented to WPTA within 24 hours of the event date). Note that if an athlete is moving into a new distance (e.g. Junior to Senior) then they must have competed in their current age group/distance event.

3. The athlete must participate in the WP Championship event, sanctioned by WPTA.
  • If an athlete is unable to compete due to illness /injury/emergency situation, a medical certificate or similar must be presented to WPTA within 24 hours of the WP Championship event date. The athlete must also have been officially entered to compete in the WP Championship. Only if the above requirement has been met will athletes be allowed to offer their ‘back-up race’ result (see point 2) for possible consideration.

4. The athlete must finish within 10% of the winners time (per age group) at the WP Championships to qualify for selection.
  • If the winning time in a particular age group is seen as being uncompetitive, an amendment to the 10% rule may be applied and/or the selection committee may choose not to select any athletes from the relevant age group.

5. The athlete must conduct him/herself in a professional and sportsman like manner at all times and obey all WPTA/TSA/ITU race rules.

6. The team selection is at the sole discretion of the ‘WPTA Team Selection Committee’ and no correspondence will be entered into.
